Each year, thousands of Kentucky students participate in the Jim Claypool Conservation Writing Contest (established in 1944) and the Jim Claypool Art Contest (established in 1974, for younger students).

Envirothon is a hands-on environmental problem solving competition for high school aged students. Participating teams complete training and testing in five natural resource categories: i.e., soils/land use, aquatic ecology, forestry, wildlife, and current environmental issues.

The Fayette County Conservation District provides two $500 scholarships to sponsor the attendance of two Fayette County students in the Kentucky Leadership Forestry Program.
